Armenia: EU project helps create basis for sorting and recycling plastic waste in Kapan

April 24,2019 14:04

With EU support, the Armenian town of Kapan, in Syunik Province, has started sorting plastic waste and preparing for recycling and re-use in the construction sector.

This became possible thanks to the “Turning environmental challenges into opportunities: Introducing building materials from plastic waste” project, which was launched in 2017.

As a result, a start-up recycling facility has been established in the town. The project has also helped create infrastructure for the separation and collection of plastic waste. Six types of building materials are being produced using plastic waste. This has helped create 35 permanent jobs and train 60 people.

The “Turning Environmental Challenges into Opportunities: Introducing Construction Materials from Plastic Waste” project aimed to create capacity for producing construction materials using plastic waste in Kapan and bring additional employment to the region.

One of the most important results expected from the project was an increase in environmental consciousness and change in the population’s behaviour.
