The United States does not deny the historical facts, new U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Lynne Tracy told reporters at a ceremony commemorating the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide at Tsitsernakaberd.
“We are here to keep our focus on remembering and honouring the memory of these victims. As I said in my confirmation hearing, the United States does not deny the historical facts, and the fact is that what took place in 1915 was one of the worst mass atrocities of the 20th century. But we remain encouraged by the resiliency of the Armenian people. And I think that’s also what today is about,” the ambassador said.
She also stressed the United States is gratitude to Americans of Armenian heritage who have contributed so much to the U.S. and the American society.
Tracy was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Armenia on 19 February. One of the former U.S. ambassadors to Armenia, John Evans called the 1915 massacre of Armenians ‘genocide’.
