It has been one month since it became known that London’s Arsenal football team will be participating in the Europa League finals, which will be taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan. The question arose of whether Azerbaijan would give the proper security guarantees to Armenian Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The head of the National Assembly Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth, and Sport Mkhitar Hayrapetyan announced that parliament supports Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s decision to not go to Baku. “In going to Baku, our footballer understands that there will be an atmosphere he will be a victim of a lot of xenophobia. According to my sources, Henrikh Mkhitaryan was given several conditions, which I believe he will speak about publicly soon.”
Hayrapetyan said that he is not only referring to guarantees of safety, but also regarding issues of what would happen if Henrikh scored a goal and someone brought an Armenian flag? Hayrapetyan said that the issue was politicized to begin with, and our footballer had to choose between safety and the sport. The Armenian parliament supports Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s decision.
