Eduard Sharmazanov. Russian-Georgian tensions not driven by Armenian interests

June 25,2019 21:38

‘I do not notice any mistakes from the Russian side here’,- announced the Speaker of the Republican Party of Armenia Eduard Sharmazanov during the meeting with journalists regarding the incident that took place in Tbilisi on June 20th during the 26th Inter-parliamentary Congress on Orthodoxy. He said that he had been to Russia and Tbilisi, and with regard to the situation in Tbilisi, he said, ‘There is an atmosphere for protesting and some tension in the center of the city, but this tension is not noticeable outside Rustaveli Avenue.”

According to him, the tension between Russia and Georgia is not in Armenia’s best interests: ‘Russia is our ally and Georgia is our brother and neighbor. Armenian-Russian relations have a long history, and the same can be said about Armenian-Georgian relations. Hence, we can’t benefit from this tension both in an economic way via the Lars route and we may fail in a political way due to many problems.”

According to Eduard Sharmazanov, it is not beneficial for Armenia that US-Iran relations become tense, either.

In Eduard Sharmazanov’s opinion, the organizers are responsible for everything that happened during the Congress of Orthodoxy. ‘Whatever has happened was caused by the organizers. Georgia was the host country and any host country has to provide a high level of safety. There have also been events in Yerevan where Azerbaijanis were present, but serious incidents did not take place. If the leaders of the Congress decided that it was best to carry out the session in Tbilisi, they were required to defend the powers of the delegates, including those from the host country.”
