The 16th annual Golden Apricot festival began on July 7th at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan. Earlier, three jubilee stars had been placed at Charles Aznavour Square in honor of the 90th birthdays of film directors Bagrat Hovhannisyan and Arman Manaryan and in honor of film director Genadi Melkonyan’s 75th birthday.
The red carpet ceremony followed. After this was the festival’s opening ceremony, and the opening film was Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or award winner ‘Parasite,’ produced by South Korean film director Bong Joon-ho.
The festival will end on July 14th. The special guest is award-winning Mexican film director Carlos Reygadas. The Golden Apricot festival received over 740 requests for participation from different countries worldwide. Several films were chosen from world-famous festivals including Cannes, Berlin, and Rotterdam.
One of the founders of the Golden Apricot festival, Harutyun Khachatryan, said that new people are working on the festival and he thinks that they will be successful. “Everything is new besides our old friend, Vivacell-MTS,” he said. He also noted that new films had been chosen and everything was done tastefully.
