On 6 July, the EU Ambassador to Armenia, Piotr Świtalski, visited the Areni-1 cave complex in the Vayots Dzor province of the country.
The EU is currently supporting the development of the cave complex as an ecotourism destination through a grant to a non-profit consortium with expertise in caving and archaeology.
Ambassador Świtalski also got acquainted with the archaeological works currently ongoing in the Gnishikadzor (Gnishik gorge) cultural landscape area. A medieval complex from the 10th century has been discovered there, along with ancient grape seeds called Areni.
Thanks to the EU’s support, this area has potential to become a destination for tourists from all over the world.
