‘It is safe to swim in Sevan other than Martuni-Vardenis portion’: Prosperous Armenia deputy

July 15,2019 23:51

“The shores of Lake Sevan are mostly clean. There are no algae. People can actively enjoy their time on Sevan’s beaches and will not experience any health issues. I call upon everyone to spend time on the lower beaches of Sevan and to not choose anywhere else,” Prosperous Armenia deputy Sergey Bagratyan told reporters during a press conference. He and fellow Prosperous Armenia deputy Naira Zohrabyan had taken samples of the water at Sevan.

“The problem is more so in the Martuni-Vardenis portion, where rivers filled with dirty water flow into Sevan. There is no system for cleaning this dirty water; no work is being done. Dirty water carries toxic substances which promote the growth of vegetation underwater. A large forested area was flooded as a result of poor policies in previous years. Rotting has caused an increase in algae growth. Experts say that an increase in temperature has also had an effect on the situation,” the deputy said.

Bagratyan, regarding the test, said that the samples will be sent to an international center in Georgia. “We will compare the results to tests carried out by local laboratories. We will then present the reality to the public.”
