Portuguese football legend Nuno Gomes: ‘Armenians and the Portuguese are very similar’

July 18,2019 23:31

Portuguese football legend and former striker Nuno Gomes has visited Armenia for a three-day tour. He visited the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial and paid his respects to the victims of the genocide. He told reporters afterwards that he came to Yerevan at the invitation of his friend, Khoren Kalashyan. He will be meeting with the FeedConstruct company due to the fact that he envisions a collaboration between the Portuguese football league and other companies. And since the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals are taking place in Yerevan, which the Portuguese team is also participating in, Gomes will also be at the matches.

Gomes spoke about Armenians’ warm hospitality. He said that he sees many similarities between Armenians and the Portuguese. Nuno knows about Armenian football in general and also is preparing to become familiar with its infrastructure during his visit. “There are many talented young football players in Armenia, and it is also important for there to be a major focus on developing child football because that is what will place the foundation for success in future football tournaments,” Nuno Gomes said while expressing his trust that the Armenian Football Federation is working in that direction.

The football legend answered Aravot Daily’s question by stating that his visit to Armenia was not a formal one, so he does not know whether the AFF is aware of his presence.
