Azeri studies expert Taron Hovhannisyan spoke about two resolutions that were passed in the US House of Representatives. “One of these resolutions is for the US President to assure Congress that any arms sold to Azerbaijan cannot be used to destroy civilian aircraft. The other is regarding a letter written in 2015 by two congressmen about mechanisms to show who violated the ceasefire at the border.”
According to Taron Hovhannisyan, the first resolution can potentially allow the Stepanakert airport to be put into operation. “The airport was repaired years ago and was ready to be put into operation. But Azerbaijan said that if it sees any aircraft in what it considers to be its air space, it will destroy the aircraft. Even the highest-ranking officials made such threats. However, the US is sending a clear message to Azerbaijan that destroying civilian aircraft will not be taken lightly.”
