“Our state recognized the Armenian Genocide and it is very demanding. We have a law which states that students must learn about the Armenian Genocide,” Lieutenant Governor of Califonia Eleni Kounalakis said during a meeting with reporters at Armenpress. She emphasized that California is one of nine states in the US that has recognized Artsakh’s independence. “I hope that this will create more opportunities for Armenia and California to work together.”
Colorado State Representative Daneya Esgar noted that Colorado is the only state in the US that has a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide on government property. “Last year, we renamed one portion of one of our state highways ‘Sardarapat Armenian Memorial Highway.’” The representative had also visited Tumo. “We are thinking about how we can also have Tumo in Colorado. We are very inspired by that center. We are also interested in programs that would involve collaboration with Armenian villages.”
Daneya Esgar added that she had also met with Armenian deputies who told her about the Velvet Revolution. “They said that women and children also took part in the revolution and not a single drop of blood was spilled. That greatly inspired me. The revolution not only changed Armenia and the Armenian people, but the whole world as well. I believe that I will visit Armenia again.”
