“The purpose of that is only for us to receive consultation. This can be beneficial in public discussions. We do not expect the Venice Commission to state whether or not the Istanbul Convention is constitutional. The convention will be sent to the Constitutional Court to receive its conclusion,” Minister of Justice Rustam Badasyan told reporters. According to him, the Venice Commission will be giving its evaluation on some of the terms outlined in the convention.
“If the convention is ratified, I would be happy if reporters followed the people who claim that the convention includes provisions for legalizing same-sex marriage or the adoption of children by same-sex couples. I would be happy if reporters called those people in several years from now and asked why none of those things took place,” Rustam Badasyan said in regard to criticism of the convention.
He added that the Venice Commission’s conclusion on the Istanbul Convention is expected to be finalized in October. Then Rustam Badasyan denied rumors circulating in the media about how he is convincing lawyers to speak out in favor of the convention.
