Kocharyan appeals court verdict, files motion on bail

September 17,2019 17:35

ARMENPRESS. Lawyers of ex-President Robert Kocharyan will appeal the September 17 court decision to the Court of Appeals.

Today, a Yerevan court of general jurisdiction denied Kocharyan’s motion on releasing him from pre-trial detention and dropping the charges.

“We will submit an appellate complaint regarding the rejection of the first motion,” Kocharyan’s lawyer Hayk Alumyan told reporters.

However, during the September 17 trial Kocharyan’s other lawyer Hovhannes Khudoyan filed a motion to court on releasing the former president on bail. The court said it will deliver its verdict over the motion at 17:00, September 20.

Judge Anna Danibekyan is presiding over the trial.

Kocharyan is charged with overthrowing constitutional order during the deadly 2008 unrest in Yerevan during his final days as president. Several other ex-officials are also charged in the case known as March 1.

Kocharyan is also charged with bribery. He denies wrongdoing.
