On September 23rd, the Defense Army of Artsakh announced that Azerbaijan made an infiltration attempt along the Artsakh-Azerbaijan border. The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan responded that its soldier got lost, ended up in the neutral zone, and was killed.
The Orbeli center’s expert on Azeri affairs, Taron Hovhannisyan, emphasized that the day before the infiltration attempt took place, information spread across Azeri social media about what this soldier did in the neutral zone.
“An Azeri military blogger wrote something that was not in the Ministry of Defense’s statement. They said that the soldier came towards the Armenian military units and threw a grenade. He tried to escape but was killed. They are trying to make this soldier into a hero. There is also information about how the soldier was athletic and was most likely a member of Azerbaijan’s wrestling federation,” Taron Hovhannisyan told reporters.
According to him, the information provided by the Defense Army of Artsakh on how this was an attempt at infiltration is credible. “It is likely that this soldier made this attempt on his own and was killed. Perhaps he was inspired by events that happened in the past and wanted to become a hero. In any case, Azerbaijan is the one responsible, because they make terrorists such as Ramil Safarov into heroes.”
