‘This mosque is a part of Shushi’s culture’: Anna Naghdalyan on controversy in Azerbaijan over restoring the mosque

October 14,2019 21:15

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, in regards to the restoration of the Gohar Agha mosque in Shushi, Artsakh, said that Armenians are casting shadows on true history “because Shushi is an Azeri city, and contrary to how it is being presented, the monument is not Iranian, but Azeri.”

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan spoke about the restoration of the mosque with reporters. She emphasized that Shushi is one of the five oldest cities in Artsakh, and the mosque is an inseparable part of its cultural heritage.

“This is restoring an important part of cultural history and this policy is being implemented without any discrimination. We have lived among different groups of people for thousands of years and we also have experience in upholding our cultural heritage,” Anna Naghdalyan emphasized.

She did not find it necessary to comment on Aliyev’s statement because Armenians witnessed how Azerbaijan destroyed their own cultural heritage in Nakhichevan.
