According to spokesperson of the Republican Party and former Vice Speaker of the National Assembly Eduard Sharmazanov, the biggest challenge that Armenia faces is Pan-Turkism. He spoke about this at the Sputnik Armenia news center. According to him, however, the current authorities do not recognize this challenge and they have not done anything to solidify Armenia’s security. “Azerbaijan and Turkey have carried out three collaborative military trainings over the past year and a half. They spoke about military aggression against Armenia, whereas the leader of our protestors spoke about how educated Aliyev is. The Artsakh conflict is surrounded by many conflicting statements, which all weaken our position in the negotiations process,” Eduard Sharmazanov said.
He also spoke about Nikol Pashinyan’s statement regarding the necessity of dramatically increasing Armenia’s military budget. The military budget of Azerbaijan is increasing by twenty times, whereas the military budget of Armenia has had virtually no increase. “We need to take note of the fact that organizing wine bottle parties and entertaining the people with reality shows is not one of the responsibilities of the country’s leader in this case. There are more important issues than posting pictures of family.”
He also spoke about the arrest of former National Assembly Chief of Staff Arsen Babayan. Eduard Sharmazanov believes that this is another demonstration of the operations against President of the Constitutional Court Hrayr Tovmasyan.
Eduard Sharmazanov believes that the only way out of the inadequate situation in Armenia is through snap parliamentary elections. He does not consider the return of the RPA or the former authorities to be necessary. Instead, according to Sharmazanov, “Azerbaijan is preparing for more military aggression, but we’re playing games. A society that is faced with hateful propaganda on behalf of its authorities faces serious challenges.”
