‘There has never been a case in Armenian history where homosexuals adopted a child’: Hayk Sargsyan on Gevorg Petrosyan’s bill

November 12,2019 18:45

Prosperous Armenia deputy Gevorg Petrosyan’s bills on banning gay marriage and marriage between transgendered individuals, as well as banning homosexual couples from adopting children, caused debates in the National Assembly.

My Step deputy Hayk Sargsyan answered reporters’ questions on what his opinion is of Gevorg Petrosyan’s bill. Sargsyan said that the less people speak about such problems, the better it will be. “Every time someone causes an uproar on this issue, it becomes more important and more people pay attention to it. This is not an issue in our country. Gevorg Petrosyan prepared a bill that would ban homosexual couples from adopting children, but there has never been such a case in Armenian history where homosexuals adopted a child. A bill was drafted on an issue that does not exist and this issue is constantly being circulated.”

When asked if the fact that such an instance never happened means that it will never happen in the future, Hayk Sargsyan said, “If it hasn’t happened in 25 years…”
