A year and a half ago, the Prime Minister’s wife, Anna Hakobyan, called upon the wives of Armenian oligarchs to stop wearing their expensive jewelry and instead, donate the money they would normally spend on this jewelry to the Armenak Urfanyan Patriotic Foundation set up by Armenak Urfanyan’s mother. Hakobyan’s call was mainly aimed towards the wives of oligarchs.
At the ‘Women’s role in the peacemaking process: opportunities and challenges’ international conference, Aravot Daily asked Hakobyan what response she received and if anyone ended up donating.
Anna Hakobyan said that she does not have any information as far as whether or not anyone responded to her call, but she did not expect anyone to respond. She explained that the intention was to show these women how superficial jewelry and fortune can seem when there is war.
Anna Hakobyan also spoke about preparing the societies of Armenia and Azerbaijan for peace with women’s united efforts. She said that it is a waste of time and resources for only one side to do this. “If initiatives only come from one side… to prepare the people of Armenia for peace when Azerbaijan is closing its heart and soul off from such initiatives is useless.”
