“There are places where the opponent has the high ground and there are places where we have the high ground. In terms of amount, we have more positions that are on the high ground by 30-40 percent,” Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia Artak Davtyan told journalists in reference to several politicians’ fears that Azerbaijan has the high ground along the Armenia-Nakhichevan border.
He said that the opponent frequently takes advantage of the situation along the Nakhichevan border. “There are no essential changes at the moment. We have had some changes over the past 2 to 3 months in terms of improving our positions, but from a strategic perspective, this has a localized nature. It is another issue entirely that we have carried out large projects to strengthen our bases and develop the roads, which will allow us to decrease the length of time necessary for transporting troops. We have optimized the bases in different locations. We have not dealt with any issues in terms of military bases.”
The Chief of Staff also said that Azerbaijan and Turkey are making efforts to strengthen the combined army along the Nakhichevan border. “They have new armaments that were not there before, so we are implementing different methods to ensure that the opponent does not have more weapons than we do along the Nakhichevan border.”
