‘An Armenian produced a medicine using scorpion venom to kill cancer cells’: Deputy

February 11,2020 19:30

“I was happy to hear that an Armenian conducted serious laboratory research in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the USA to produce a drug containing green scorpion venom that is meant to kill cancer cells. It has been registered in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the Dominican Republic, but it is considered to be a supplement in the USA. I would like to know whether all the additives used in Armenia are safe,” Prosperous Armenia deputy Mikayel Melkumyan asked the deputy minister of Health, Anahit Avanesyan, during a discussion in parliament on projects taking place in the health sector.

Anahit Avanesyan replied that the medicines and dietary supplements that are legally imported in Armenia are in accordance with all standards, they are safe, and the ministry is responsible for their quality.

As a result of Aravot Daily conducting a search on the subject, the medicine in question is not from the venom a green scorpion, but from the venom of a Caribbean blue scorpion. The name of the medicine is Escozine.

The Ministry of Health made a statement about this in 2019. “On January 23rd, Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan ordered that the Escozine drug, which is not considered to be an anti-cancerous medication, be collected from the Mikayelyan NGO due to the spread of misinformation about its use. The drug is currently being held at the Republican Center for Humanitarian Aid of the Ministry of Health. The Escozine drug is a dietary supplement. Information about its registration is available at the General Register of State Registration Certificates of the Eurasian Economic Commission.”
