ASEM Day 2020: Asia meets Europe – Europe meets Asia

March 02,2020 12:05

ASEM is about dialogue among Asians and Europeans at all levels. It has been going for more than 20 years, proving its strategic relevance.

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is the major political platform linking Europe and Asia. Its 53 partner countries represent 60% of the world’s GDP, more than 60% of the world’s population and around 55% of global trade.

In 2016, in Ulaanbaatar, European and Asian Heads of State and Government designated March 1 as the ‘ASEM Day’. Since then, ASEM Day celebrations have marked every year the relations and the friendship between Europe and Asia.

It’s a day to promote cooperation, partnership and connectivity across these two mighty continents.

On 1 March, in Europe and Asia alike, there will be exchanges and encounters, involving young people, students, lectures, the business world and the diplomatic community. Because ASEM is about cooperation among citizens. And it’s about cooperation among institutions.

The next ASEM summit will be held on 16-17 November 2020 in Phnom Pehn, hosted and chaired by Cambodia. Presidents and Prime Ministers will come together to discuss pressing global challenges – and how to chart a common response. This will be the thirteenth ASEM Summit and its overarching theme will be ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Shared Growth.’

In a world of accelerating change and growing uncertainty, ASEM is a key building block for working together for a rules based international order which promotes and preserves peace and stability.
