“Life after the Corona crisis will be different – but our rights and freedoms should stay the same,” said PACE President Rik Daems in a special video message to mark the Schuman Declaration (9 May) and the forthcoming 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights.
“In the Council of Europe, our cornerstone is the European Convention and the protection of fundamental freedoms. These rights and freedoms are under pressure now because of the crisis. We should uphold them – as we have done for the past seventy years,” he said.
“The Corona crisis is severe. Life after it will be different – but our rights and freedoms should stay the same. We Europeans should unite to defend all of them for the benefit of the more than 800 million European citizens in our 47 member States.”
