‘This is the situation that we always tried to avoid’: Torosyan on the coronavirus situation

According to Thursday’s data, 335 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Armenia, 162 have recovered, and three people died. The overall number of cases is 5,606, of which 2,581 have recovered. Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan spoke about this in the government press center. He said that 2,928 patients are currently undergoing treatment. This also includes people who are simply under doctors’ care and do not need to be in the hospital. According to the minister, the overall number of deaths is 70. There were also 27 cases where the patient was confirmed to have the coronavirus, but their death was caused by another illness.

“We have interesting data in the sense that the number of active coronavirus patients increased by 170 in one day, as opposed to yesterday when it decreased by 30 because more people recovered than were confirmed,” Torosyan said.

According to him, a record was reached. In one day, a record of 1,751 tests was administered, which was unprecedented. Overall, the number of tests reached 45,822. “One month ago, we planned to increase the number of tests and administer 1,000 tests per day. But I can say that we already passed that number by administering 1,751 tests.”

At the moment, as the minister said, 135 coronavirus patients are in serious condition, 63 are in critical condition, and 15 patients are on ventilators. “So, along with the increase in the number of cases, which mostly are asymptomatic, there is also an increase in the number of patients in critical condition as well as those who need to use ventilators. This is the situation that we always tried to avoid because the number of positive cases isn’t as dangerous as having patients in serious and critical conditions. We need to do everything to make sure that any citizen in critical condition can receive medical assistance in the rehabilitation unit. We are still able to withstand this pressure, but we need to put more effort into making sure that this pressure does not increase. And the majority of those efforts will go into following the rules.”

He said that people who are asymptomatic or who have mild symptoms will be sent home from hotels on Friday. They will be under doctors’ care. Newly confirmed cases that are also asymptomatic or mild will need to self-isolate and receive treatment at home.
