The co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Albania by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Joseph O’Reilly (Ireland, EPP/CD) and Petter Eide (Norway, UEL), today welcomed the agreement reached between the ruling majority and the parliamentary and non-parliamentary opposition on reform of the electoral framework that will govern the country’s next election.
“We have always stressed the importance of electoral reform for the resolution of the political crisis in the country. We therefore welcome the agreement reached between all political forces on this reform. We realise this was not an easy process and that each side had to make compromises. It is now important that all stakeholders implement the new legal framework for elections not only according to the letter but also the spirit of the agreement,” said the co-rapporteurs.
They intend to make a fact-finding visit to the country in the autumn of this year when the COVID-19 situation allows. Implementation of the agreement on electoral reform will be one of the topics on their agenda.
