Nikol Pashiyan: ‘95 percent of people with the coronavirus did not wear masks, uphold social distancing, or sanitize their hands’

June 11,2020 21:35

The coronavirus pandemic in Armenia, unfortunately, continues to remain the main issue on the government’s agenda. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke about this before the session of government began. Then, the Minister of Health, Arsen Torosyan, presented the current pandemic situation. “The number of new cases registered yesterday reached 566 in comparison with the 428 registered the previous day. This is critical, but we also increased the number of tests from 1,752 to 2,233. The percent of positive tests remains about the same- 25 percent in comparison to the previous day’s 24 percent.”

According to Torosyan, 18 deaths were also registered and the overall number of deaths is 245. “As of 9:00 AM, we have only 32 people who need to be hospitalized, of which only 4 of them are at home. The other 28 are in other hospitals, but they need to be transported to coronavirus units or hospitals. Overall, the situation continues to remain tense, but this is being resolved by an increase in our capabilities and our ability to serve people. We need to continue with our restrictive measures so that we can keep the situation under control as much as possible.”

Prime Minister Pashinyan added that the government’s strategy is to continue its restrictive measures and uphold the pandemic rules within society, which is considered to be the main way to decrease the number of cases. “The results of our activities will be seen in one week.”

Pashinyan also called upon everyone to follow the rules and wear masks, uphold social distancing, and wash their hands. “Experience shows that following these rules provides the best results. So, 95 percent of cases- because there is a 5 percent chance otherwise- either did not wear masks, uphold social distancing, or did not sanitize their hands frequently. This is obvious. As of late, it has become a major issue that people did not follow the rules during funerals and viewings. Not only does the police have a major role to play here, but also the citizens. We have had many cases in which the spread of the virus took place due to people not following the rules at funerals and viewings. The other issue is weddings. And it is important for our citizens to take the rules seriously.”

The Prime Minister said that this issue can be resolved through cooperation between the government and citizens.
