“Yes, this is a problem, because there is no one in the international community who has been able to solve this problem. The problem is growing even tenser in Armenia as we take the current political reality into consideration,” My Step deputy Artur Hovhannisyan said at the Article 3 press club during the “Hate Speech in Armenia: Reality in Armenia” discussion panel.
“Hate speech is usually not an emotional demonstration, but an intended action used to insult someone else’s dignity,” the deputy said.
According to him, Facebook is the main platform through which hate speech is spread because it is possible to see such speech in comments and statuses. “The problem also exists in the media where real or fake pages use such speech on their sites and they are not held responsible for the hate speech in the comments.”
The deputy believes that, although solving the issue of hate speech is difficult, it is important to initially focus on legislative changes in the media sector. “Our political team needs to pay more attention to its public comments so that it does not reproduce hate speech. We also need to demand the same from our opponents, which is difficult and which has not worked well as of late. In any case, our political team is doing everything to ensure that it is not a bad role model for society and that it does not use hate speech.”
