EU NEIGHBOURS . On 23 June, a shipment of medical equipment arrived in Ukraine to help healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The one million units of personal protective equipment have been funded by the EU and procured by the World Health Organization (WHO) in cooperation with the rest of the United Nations system. The assistance includes 500,000 medical masks, 125,000 respirators, 250,000 gowns, 50,000 face shields and 2,500 goggles.

These supplies will cover the personal protection needs of 50 hospitals working at full capacity across Ukraine for at least one month.

All items have been checked to ensure they meet the quality and safety standards for healthcare staff working with COVID-19 patients.

The supplies are part of the EU’s larger assistance package and its ‘Solidarity for Health’ initiative, which is implemented in partnership with the WHO Regional Office for Europe and aims to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The delivery of laboratory supplies (equipment, consumables and reagents) is also ongoing with further deliveries expected within two weeks.
