EU NEIGHBOURS. With the support of the EU, the ‘Shared environmental information system’ initiative (SEIS) provided technical assistance to Ukraine for the transfer of air quality data to the European Environment Agency.
The air quality index is based on calculating the concentration of several pollutants: ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and suspended dust particles. This data is transmitted every hour from automated posts of the Donetsk Regional State Administration.
The ‘European Neighbourhood instrument SEIS II East’ project trained Ukrainian air monitoring experts, and provided the software for the organisation of storage, verification and transmission of air quality data.
Ukraine is the second Eastern partner country after Georgia to meet all technical requirements for the organisation of air quality data transfer. The country plans to further improve the network of automated air quality control points and the exchange of air quality data.
