Members of the Armenian Youth Federation held protests on July 21st in front of the Consulate of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles.

Hundreds of protesters condemned the actions and attacks by Azerbaijan at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. During the protests, they were shouting, “Shame on you, Aliyev,” “Fight, fight until the end,” “We are with our soldiers,” “We are with Artsakh and Armenia,” “Inhumane Aliyev,” and “No more war.” Fights also broke out during the protests due to the fact that Azerbaijanis vandalized an Armenian girl’s car.

Singer Andre (Andre Hovnanyan) also participated in the protests. He sang “Sari Aghjik” and the protesters sang along with him.

Azerbaijan rejects the Armenian origin of the song “Sari Aghjik/Sari Gelin” and emphasizes that this song has an Azerbaijani-Turkish origin. Some Turks consider the song to be Armenian, and others consider it to be Turkish, but they never say that it’s Azerbaijani. It also has a Persian version. The phrase “Sari Gelin” means “yellow bride” or “new bride” in Turkish. It is an Armenian folk song that has also been translated in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. The song’s melody, foundation, and musical mode are Armenian. The song was popular in Armenian towns in present-day Turkey even in the 19th century. It also is popular among Georgian Armenians due to the fact that most of them trace their roots to Erzurum. Descendants of Armenian Genocide survivors sing the song in several countries throughout the world.
