Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a consultative meeting to discuss the waste collection system strategy and a relevant program of activities. The strategy features a two-year program of activities aimed at improving waste collection services in Armenia, enforcing high environmental standards, introducing appropriate mechanisms for waste to be recycled, etc.
New equipment is being imported. In particular, 59 units of equipment and 600 garbage cans have already been purchased. In cooperation with international partners, work is underway to build two new large landfills in Yerevan and in Hrazdan. Construction is due to start in the near future.
Specific waste collection schemes shall be developed for communities: garbage collection points will be available in individual settlements, and separate procedures shall be applicable to construction waste. The meeting also discussed waste processing possibilities and a set of measures planned in this field.
Highlighting the importance of having an international standards-compliant waste collection system in Armenia, Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that the strategy is supposed to fully address this problem. The Premier stressed the need to organize garbage disposal in recreation areas, in coastal areas of rivers and gave instructions to this effect.
