“The Minister of Foreign Affairs was the one held responsible for the country’s military failures, but the black clouds were forming around his head long before that. The right moment was simply chosen for his resignation,” My Step deputy Tatev Hayrapetyan said at the Ararat press club in reference to the resignation of former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, and the appointment of Jeyhun Bayramov in his place.
But she believes that the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, allowed a mistake to occur as a result of his anger: he tried to blame everything on his diplomats. “He caused a lot of damage to his foreign diplomatic corps, which is not that bad from our perspective. But Aliyev truly did cause a lot of damage in that aspect. And I must note that Aliyev’s statements, actions, and the appointment of a new minister after that raised a lot of questions both inside and outside of Azerbaijan. This is because the issue is not only about appointing diplomats, but it is uncertain what this individual has to do with foreign policy and especially the Artsakh issue. Even more since Azerbaijan’s mouthpieces on the Artsakh issue are other people. The negotiations process will continue and we will see what developments take place, particularly if the new minister will come to the negotiations table and continue the process.”
