Admirers of classical music in Armenia have had a lasting acquaintance with Alexey Shor’s art. The classical works of the contemporary Maltese composer have been performed multiple times by various artists and musical groups in concerts halls in Yerevan, Armenia. Shor’s chamber, symphony, ballet pieces presented here have always harvested warm acclamations of the audience. His music is presently performed by renowned soloists and orchestras in highly prestigious stages around the world.
Recently, we had another chance to enjoy the composer’s beautiful, melodic and authentic art. In the framework of the Music 20 festival organized by the European Foundation for Support of Culture, Shor’s “Travel Notebook” piano concerto, “Crystal Palace” suite, Clarinet concerto and other works were performed by the cellist Boris Andrianov, violinists Andrey Baranov, Francesca Dego, Hayk Kazazyan, pianist Nikita Mndoyants, clarinetist Igor Fyodorov and a number of other renowned musicians. As noted by Andrey Baranov and Nikita Mndoyants, for instance, they have Alexey Shor’s pieces included in their repertoires which they have been and will be performing on various stages.
The musicians describe Shor’s melodies to have authentic harmony and romantic sentimentality. Not only are they pleasurable to the listeners, but they also demand highly skillful performance by the musicians. His music has a very distinct profile of its own. The composer’s concerts are also included in the repertoires of Armenian musicians Narek Hakhnazaryan, Nare Arghamanyan, the Khachaturian trio and many other distinguished soloists and ensembles.
Shor himself has visited Armenia multiple times and has always emphasized his special feelings for Armenia as a heartwarming place with sensitive and demanding audience. In one of his interviews given while in Armenia, Shor confessed that avant-garde perceptions and style of music do not belong to him and that he finds his passion in Bach and Viennese classics.
