“Have you or the Prime Minister negotiated with Georgia yet regarding the Armenian citizens who remained in Georgia so they can return to Armenia by land? They were stuck in Russia and they were unable to return by plane,” the head of the Bright Armenia faction, Edmon Marukyan, asked the commandant of the state of emergency and deputy prime minister, Tigran Avinyan.
The commandant responded that they are not currently negotiating on reopening the border because the situation surrounding the pandemic will not allow them to do so. “The same goes for Iran. When the situation improves, I believe that these issues will be discussed.”
Regarding Armenian citizens’ return in their personal vehicles, Avinyan said that Armenian consulates had previously organized their return in special buses. The deputy suggested that Armenians who are in Georgia with their personal vehicles should be escorted by the police so that any contact can be eliminated. Avinyan said that this is an option worth discussing if there is a sufficient number of people.
Edmon Marukyan also asked if they negotiated with the Russian president on allowing Armenian migrant workers to return to Russia to work. Tigran Avinyan said, “Russia has expressed its willingness to open the border. Future agreements and personal negotiations are being discussed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on it.”
