“We do not carry out the function of opening the border. We are also not the ones to decide whom Russia should allow in. Our function is to be involved with the diaspora and Armenia-Diaspora connections. These people need to appeal to the state of emergency command and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Zareh Sinanyan, said in response to citizens wishing to return to Russia who were carrying out protests by the government building.
When asked about what the government is doing for citizens who came to Armenia and cannot return to their families, Sinanyan responded that those people cannot return for an objective reason- COVID-19- but the government is carrying out negotiations. “I believe that everything is being done.”
Citizens wishing to return to Russia who have been in Armenia for six months and are unable to leave the country due to closed borders were protesting in front of the government building once again. They are demanding that the Armenian government negotiates with the Russian side to come to an agreement to open the borders.
