“You are the first Armenians to see these paintings,” US Ambassador to Armenia Lynne Tracy told reporters while presenting the paintings on display at the ambassador’s residence. One of these paintings was Hovsep Pushman’s “Hope” (1917). It was a present for US President Woodrow Wilson from the Armenian delegation led by Pushman’s wife, Julia. The delegation visited the White House in 1917 and met President Wilson.

The Ottoman Empire’s participation in World War One was paired with unprecedented violence against Armenians. It was thanks to the efforts of the 28th President of the United States that the border was determined and fixed between Armenia and Turkey, the significance of which is immeasurable for the Republic of Armenia.

The portrait depicts Pushman’s niece, Dora, who is wearing the traditional Armenian costume and holding a Mountain Snowdrop flower. This painting, among others, were brought to the US Ambassador’s residence for five months as part of the Art in the Embassy program, which will allow international citizens to gain a sense of familiarity with extraordinary works of art. Pushman’s art is currently on display at Woodrow Wilson’s house museum in Washington, D.C.

“This beautiful Armenian woman’s portrait was gifted to President Wilson in 1917 as a sign of gratitude for the help the USA provided Armenians. The portrait depicts hope instead of tragedy, as well as the strong ties between the Armenian and American people,” the ambassador said.

According to the ambassador, Armenians and Americans have rich relations that are based on cultural heritage and values. “It is an honor for me to serve as the US ambassador to Armenia and continue strengthening the ties and cooperation between our people,” Ambassador Tracy said.

Regarding Hovsep Pushman’s “Hope” painting, she added that the painting had an Armenian touch. She said that she frequently looks at the paintings when she is tired because diplomats need the positive and peaceful energy provided by artwork.
