EU and partners discuss progress in Moldova–Ukraine border management

September 16,2020 21:21

EU NEIGHBOURS. On 16 September, the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) hosted an advisory board meeting on Moldova–Ukraine border management issues.

The meeting took place online and discussed the progress achieved by the EUBAM and its partner services during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The participants agreed that some of the most important achievements were the sustained contribution to launching an inclusive dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol, as well as the support in establishing a joint control along the Moldova–Ukraine state border. The advisory board also acknowledged the efforts made towards preventing, detecting and investigating cross-border crimes.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the foreign ministries, border, customs and law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, the EU Delegations to both countries, the International Organization for Migration, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the United Nations Development Programme.

EUBAM has worked in Moldova and Ukraine since 2005. The mission’s main objective is to improve the delivery of service to citizens of both countries (e.g. through shorter waiting periods at border crossings and strengthening border security) and to assist the authorities in the fight against fraud and smugglers.
