‘Artsakh’s people have the right to self-determination, and the international community should force Turkey out of this conflict’: Nikol Pashinyan’s interview with BBC

September 30,2020 16:33

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan today gave an interview to the British service of BBC.

During the interview, the Premier called on the international community to condemn the aggression launcged by Turkey and Azerbaijan against Artsakh and Armenia. Nikol Pashinyan noted that for three days now, civilian population in Artsakh has been under attack by Azerbaijan’s armed forces, and today Turkish forces have joined the aggression launched against the civilian population of Armenia.

“A few days ago, the armed forces of Azerbaijan initiated large-scale hostilities along the line of contact with Nagorno-Karabakh. We characterize them as a pre-planned aggression against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan’s armed forces are targeting cities and villages, the civilian population and infrastructure in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Earlier today the same occurred in the villages on the territory of the Republic of Armenia: the armed forces of Azerbaijan continued their offensive operations. I consider it important to state that Turkish military instructors and officers are stationed in Azerbaijan and are directly involved in hostilities, as a result of which dozens of people were killed and hundreds of people were injured,” Prime Minister Pashinyan said.

Prime Minister Pashinyan said Turkish F-16 fighters had attacked Armenia and Artsakh. “Turkish F-16 fighters are currently flying over Nagorno-Karabakh and are fully involved in hostilities. Turkey does not conceal this fact. Only two countries have declared that they intend to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through force: the first is Azerbaijan, and the second is Turkey. Nagorno Karabakh and Armenia are facing an existential threat,” the Prime Minister noted.

Coming to Azerbaijan’s statements that the Armenian side was allegedly the first to resume the hostilities, Nikol Pashinyan noted that any accusation should be based on concrete facts. “As I became Armenia’s Prime Minister, I proposed a formula for the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict since I do believe that there is no military solution to that issue: any resolution of the conflict should be acceptable to the people of Armenia, to the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, and to the people of Azerbaijan. I was the first Armenian leader involved in the negotiation process to make such a statement,” the Premier said

The Prime Minister of Armenia stressed that the people of Artsakh have the right to self-determination, and the international community should force Turkey out of this conflict, since its involvement in the conflict cannot but aggravate the situation.
