Weightlifting World Champion, two-time European Champion, two-time silver medalist, and Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Armenia, Nazik Avdalyan, volunteered for the war effort and is waiting for the order to go to the Artsakh frontline.

In an interview with Aravot Daily, the athlete from Gyumri said, “There is nothing surprising or strange about Armenian women being prepared to go to war to fight alongside their husbands, brothers, fathers, and children in defense of the Motherland’s borders. And it’s normal because we want to defend our country and families. We don’t want to take other people’s territory. It’s not a coincidence that more Armenian women volunteered to join the war effort than Azerbaijani men did.”

When asked where she sees herself going if she does get called, Nazik Avdalyan said, “It’s not like I can’t be helpful on the battlefield. I know how to use several weapons. I also am a psychologist and kinesiologist by profession. Therefore, I will serve wherever the commanders see fit.”

Nazik Avdalyan jokingly said that she did not mention the fact that she is a weightlifter when she signed up to volunteer because she didn’t think it mattered on the battlefield. Nazik, who is one of the most popular athletes in Armenia, concluded our interview with the following words: “When I informed my family of my decision, I said that they shouldn’t even try to stop me. And I’m happy that they respected my decision no matter how difficult that was to do for them. I can’t imagine any Armenian family that would think differently. This is a war for all of us, and we need to be united as one. I have no doubt that the final victory will be ours. We will win!”
