‘Negotiations on the settlement of the Cyprus problem must resume without delay’

October 16,2020 13:52

“The unilateral move to open the closed parts of Varosha is clearly contrary to the provisions of the standing international resolutions on the Cyprus issue,” said Dame Cheryl Gillan (United Kingdom, EC/DA), Chair of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), following a discussion in the Committee today.

“There is concern that this move may further undermine the efforts to find a solution to this protracted conflict, and bring in additional tension in the East Mediterranean.”

“Negotiations on the settlement of the Cyprus problem must resume without delay. All sides involved must work in good faith to find a compromise solution on all outstanding issues on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions.”

Varosha, a beach resort, was fenced off 46 years ago after the division of the island.
