The Holy Savior Ghazanchetsots Cathedral is one of the symbols of Artsakh. It was built between 1868 and 1887.
During the first Artsakh War, the Azerbaijanis used the church as a place to store their GRAD missiles. The church had been badly damaged during the first war, and the dome was completely destroyed. It was renovated in 1998.
Visitors lit candles and prayed in the church shortly after it was shelled.
“This display of vandalism is against the laws of humanity and God. We will fix it,” President of Artsakh Arayik Harutyunyan had said.
