“Vienna was struck in the heart last night. This heinous terrorist attack in the Austrian capital is deeply worrying, but it will not deter us in defending of our democratic rights and freedoms. The Council of Europe stands in solidarity with Austria, its authorities and the Austrian people. We will remain resolute and further strengthen our cooperation in the fight against extremism and terrorism.

On behalf of the Council of Europe, I express our sincere condolences to Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, the people of Austria and especially to the families and friends of the victims. I wish those suffering injuries from the attack a full recovery. I also pay tribute to the citizens and police of Vienna who have managed this situation in an exemplary manner under the circumstances. “
