Facebook is the same market, the same political market, where ignorance, arrogance, and demagoguery are what people applaud the most. Arguments are not important. What’s important is yelling loud enough and giving your voice convincing ups and downs. Some rhetoricians come to power, and the consequences of that are always disastrous no matter what country it is, all the way from Ancient Athens to modern Armenia. How can we oppose that? I believe it can be done through the soft but firm resistance of the intellectual elite. Yelling should be contrasted with educated speech, dark instincts with enlightenment, myths and superstition with knowledge, and foolish passions with thoughtful actions. The worst situation is created in society when intellectuals try to “go with the flow” and do what they can to please the crowds. They are scared of “zombie” attacks. Whoever has acted that way in recent years is definitely responsible for the current situation in Armenia.
