Expert on international law Ara Ghazaryan believes that, if Azerbaijan truly attempts to initiate a process demanding compensation from Armenia, then it will not be included in a legal process, but in the supposed peace agreement. “But since the status quo has changed, the parties have come to a level that is equally regulated. Both have equal opportunities here, and Armenia can present its own demands for compensation. There has been experience internationally where it has been decided that it is better for both sides to abandon that demand,” he said during an online discussion with the Article 3 Press Club.
Regarding the legal process, Ara Ghazaryan said that Azerbaijan theoretically has a low chance of receiving any compensation. “The process will theoretically lead to a peace treaty, not this ceasefire agreement, which does not include details of an international treaty.”
Azerbaijan had announced that it will demand $50 billion in compensation from Armenia.
