Political scientist Gagik Hambaryan called the delimitation of the national border between Armenia and Azerbaijan using GPS systems in the eastern portion of Syunik to be embarrassing during an interview with Aravot Daily.
“It is embarrassing that they are conducting delimitation with a GPS system. GPS belongs to Google, and Google is an organization that seeks to gain profit. Has anyone guaranteed that the leaders of Azerbaijan or Turkey have not gotten into contact with the owners of Google and asked to mark the borders a few kilometers east to hurt the Republic of Armenia? Second, why did Nikol Pashinyan liquidate the Geodesy and Cartography SNCO in April 2020 when all documents were being held there? Third, they are conducting delimitation and announcing that not even an inch of land from Syunik is being handed over to Azerbaijan. Fine, let’s say that this is true. The majority of society is not aware of Armenian geography, let alone most of the world. Syunik is a mountainous region where the majority of settlements are in canyons. As a result of this delimitation, 13 settlements in Syunik will be directly targeted by the Azerbaijani army. In order to make this clearer, imagine that you live in a one-story home, and you live next to a 5-story building. That building once belonged to you, but then Nikol Pashinyan came and that building was handed over to your enemy. The enemy seeks to hurt you at every opportunity, and the enemy decides to settle down on the fifth floor. Both your home and your backyard are being watched from the fifth floor. Thirteen settlements are currently in that situation, including Kapan, Goris, Khndzoresk, and Tegh. Not to mention Shurnukh. I think that Nikol Pashinyan tried to get revenge against Shurnukh because, after he came to power, some degenerates who supported him held a party in the village, for which they were beaten. Now, a part of Shurnukh is being handed over to Azerbaijan.”
According to the political scientist, Nikol Pashinyan frequently says that Armenia did not hand over any land, but the hills guarding those territories have been handed over. Besides that, Pashinyan said that those territories had to have been handed over in accordance with the 5+2 option, but that is not true. First, those territories should not have been handed over so quickly as he had done. In addition, if that transaction were to have happened, we should have been prepared for everything. But instead, the situation arose where people encounter Azerbaijanis when they travel from Goris to Kapan.
“The claim that no land has been handed over from Syunik is a form of manipulation and a lie. All of this will result in the emptying of Syunik, since not everyone will want to live in settlements that are constantly in danger and where Azerbaijanis hold comfortable and important positions,” Gagik Hambaryan said.
