Snow cleaning in the capital is mainly maintained by the municipal “Waste Removal and Sanitary Cleaning in Yerevan” company. However, business entities are responsible for cleaning up the pavements. In 2009, the Council of Elders of Yerevan made a decision on obligatory improvement of real estate and the surrounding public areas. Accordingly, business entities are obliged to clean up adjacent pavements from snow and ice. In case of failing this activity business entities are applied administrative penalty of 15.000-20.000 AMD. Yet, not all businesses are equally responsible and some violations are fixed even after appropriate notification received from the staff of administrative districts.
During the regular working meeting in the City Hall Mayor Hayk Marutyan raised this problem and demanded that the heads of the administrative districts be consistent in this regard and apply all their powers to bring to responsibility all those business entities which don’t fulfill the requirements set by the Council of Elders.
According to the Mayor, if the appropriate law is followed and executed correctly and the system is properly organized there won’t be any problems rooted. The law requires that business entities shall clean up the areas adjacent to their properties and condominiums shall clean up yard areas.
Obligatory improvement requirement also includes greening, landscaping and paving of the adjacent sidewalks. This kind of social responsibility is customary in many developed countries. For instance, in Yerevan there are more than 4000 business entities in Kentron district of Yerevan, about 2150 ones in Arabkir district, and in case each of them comply with the requirements of law, our city will certainly become cleaner and well-arranged.
