Partnership for Good Governance: combating discrimination on the grounds of disability in Armenia

March 02,2021 14:45

EU NEIGHBOURS . A new EU-funded project on combating discrimination affecting disabled persons has begun in Armenia. It will be implemented from February to July 2021 by the UNISON NGO.

The project aims to help create zero tolerance to discrimination on the grounds of disability in Armenia, where the vast majority of state facilities, public transport and cultural venues and other public spaces are physically inaccessible to people with reduced mobility. The project will focus on raising awareness of the vulnerability of girls and women with disabilities, who are subject to double discrimination – both as disabled and as females. The project will also promote the substantive debates on the relevant legislation and procedures.

The UNISON NGO will also conduct a survey among people with disabilities and a study of the best international practices/guidelines on anti-discrimination. It will also organise three workshops on different types of discrimination, a TV programme, publication of a booklet and produce three video messages featuring people with disabilities.

This project is one of the five civil society projects supported by a regional anti-discrimination project in Armenia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, aimed at combating discrimination, favouring inclusion of groups at risk of discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes, and raising awareness among vulnerable communities and the general public about redress to discrimination.

The activity is implemented in the framework of the regional project ‘Strengthening access to justice for victims of discrimination, hate crime and hate speech in the Eastern Partnership’funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe as part of the Partnership for Good Governance.
