Around 10,000 people from Kashatagh do not have a place to live: Zohrab Erkoyan

March 19,2021 00:00

Around 10,000 people from Kashatagh do not have a place to live. Three to four thousand families from Kashatagh registered at the Artsakh government’s operative headquarters in  Armenia. They were displaced and deprived of their belongings as a result of the 44-Day War.

The editor-in-chief of the Meran newspaper, Zohrab Erkoyan, said that the majority of displaced people from Kashatagh returned to the places where they formerly lived in the Republic of Armenia during a press conference at the Tesaket press club. He recalled that many of our compatriots who had resettled in Kashatagh enthusiastically accepted the offer to relocate to the liberated region. Many even sold their apartments in Armenia and moved to Kashatagh. Some of the people who relocated to Kashatagh had become homeless as a result of the disaster zone. Now, those families are homeless once again.

“Some people from Kashatagh did not even have time to gather their belongings, and in some cases, even their documentation. Lots of construction took place in Kashatagh in recent years. Roads, schools, and homes were built, living conditions improved, and churches were renovated,” Erkoyan said, adding that the Kashatagh region had approximately 20,000 hectares of arable land, 3,000 hectares of fruit gardens, over 10,000 cattle, and a large amount of agricultural machinery. There is no clear data regarding the property losses in Kashatagh yet.

Zohrab Erkoyan also said that many families are currently living in non-governmental buildings. They do not even have minimal living conditions in some of these buildings.

“Solutions to their urgent problems have been provided, but they are not systematic. There are families who have not yet been able to benefit from financial assistance programs due to issues with paperwork. Many Kashatagh residents have not yet received compensation for utility bills and rent. The issue of financial support for the families of wounded and fallen soldiers required a coordinated approach on behalf of the state,” Erkoyan said.

Mariam Avagyan, the coordinator of the Assembly of Armenian Refugees from the Azerbaijani SSR, added that refugees from the Azerbaijani SSR also relocated to the liberated Kashatagh and Karvachar regions.
