Eurasia Group’s Ian Bremmer confirms White House plans to affirm the Armenian Genocide

March 23,2021 11:28

Washington, D.C. – In a Twitter post Saturday, March 20, 2021, followed by more detail this morning, Ian Bremmer, president and founder of the Eurasia Group, reports the White House’s plans to affirm the Armenian Genocide as promised, reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly).

The Tweet read: “White House: US will formally recognize Armenian genocide.” This morning’s elaboration included the many issues Turkey has generated and continued: “then last week in response to a bipartisan letter from [38] senators calling on Biden to recognize, the White House moved closer, responding: ‘this Administration is committed to promoting respect for human rights and ensuring such atrocities are not repeated’ and concluded: ‘a critical part of that is acknowledging history,’ which avoided front running a formal announcement (and with Blinken heading to a NATO ministerial in Europe this week, it would be awkward timing for the first high level face to face between the US and Turkey), while signaling the intention. When asked whether that statement confirmed the genocide recognition would proceed, a White House advisor told me ‘that’s what he pledged as a candidate and that’s the policy going forward.”

Ian Bremmer’s news matches the Assembly’s understanding of President Biden’s position, especially considering his record on the issue, being true to his word, and reaffirming America’s values and U.S. credibility around the world – it has been 40 years since President Reagan did the same. We commend U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez and the 37 Senators who joined him last week in urging President Biden to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. We also applaud the leadership of the Congressional Armenian Caucus and champions and supporters in the U.S. House of Representatives, as we recall with great pride the overwhelming passage of the Armenian Genocide resolutions last Congress in the House of Representatives by a vote of 405 to 11, as well as in the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent. We also very much appreciate all those who have helped and are currently engaged in advocating for the truth and genocide prevention.

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.
