“The upcoming elections will be a true catastrophe for our people,” the president of the Writers’ Union of Armenia, Abgar Apinyan, said during a press conference at the Tesaket press club.
According to him, the upcoming elections will deepen the current crisis even further. He believes that no solution will be reached as a result of these elections, and explained, “The Civil Contract political party, the force that governs the ruling levers, already held elections. The elections that took place in Artsakh where the governing bodies were formed were embarrassing, and we saw the face of that government during the 44-Day War. Accusations of treason and careless treatment towards statehood and the Armenian army.”
In Abgar Apinyan’s opinion, the way out of the current crisis may be for the elections to be organized by an interim government, which should remove all representatives of Civil Contract from the levers of power. He emphasized, “There must be new people in the government. All the ministers must resign, the prime minister must resign, and the National Assembly must be dissolved because they are deepening the crisis. That political force is at the root of all these troubles and misfortunes. Those who called themselves the ‘new regime’ brought plague and misfortune to the Armenian people.”
Upon the observation that it seems as though the opposition accepted the idea of organizing elections as they gathered their tents from Baghramyan Avenue, Abgar Apinyan said, “The way out is to hold elections, but we must make the new group elected during the former elections part of history. New forces must organize the new elections.”

Regarding the eradication of Armenian cultural heritage by Azerbaijan, especially the most recent case where the Zoravor St. Astvatsatsin church in Mekhakavan (Jabrayil) was completely destroyed as discovered by BBC, Abgar Apinyan expressed painfully, “We have not seen any actions taken by the Armenian government. I want to discuss this issue with the Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport personally. We must force these authorities to work as long as they are in power. We have not seen any steps taken by the government, and the ministry is obligated to resolve these issues in the international arena. It must be responsible for our cultural heritage. BBC is more interested in uncovering a crime, whereas Armenia is silent and not responding to any insults. To expect that the Russian peacekeepers will solve issues or that Russia will ask questions on our behalf is ridiculous. Armenia must speak out about its own problems.”
