Armenak Urfanyan’s mother: They didn’t learn anything from the April War, they stayed asleep

April 02,2021 20:16

Five years ago today, in 2016, Azerbaijan launched large-scale attacks along the entire length of the Artsakh-Azerbaijan line of contact. Heavy battles took place particularly in the south (Hadrut) and north (Martakert). The clashes lasted for four days, which is why the attacks are referred to as the Four-Day War.

The relatives of April War heroes visited the Yerablur Military Pantheon. Hero of Artsakh, Captain Armenak Urfanyan’s mother, Hamest Nersisyan, told reporters, “They didn’t learn anything from the April War. They stayed asleep. They needed to arm our military.”

According to Nersisyan, the results of the war were unpleasant for Azerbaijan, and it was obvious that there would be another war. “They became more powerful, and with the help of several countries, they reached their terrible goal. This defeat was terrible for all of us. None of us can live with this defeat because it was so unfair.”

Hamest Nersisyan understands that many mistakes can happen during war. According to her, organizational efforts were poor during the April War. It wasn’t that they made mistakes, but they couldn’t do it. “Events unfolded very quickly with these large-scale attacks. Who would have thought that they would have used phosphorus against our 18 year olds? If they fought with our soldiers face-to-face, our soldiers would have won. Our officers are wonderful professionals. We gave up 22 positions during the April War, but the April War is different in the sense that no one helped Armenak and his soldiers. The four of them fought for 6 hours, which is superheroism. We would have also lost that position, but our boys stopped them.”
