‘If Azerbaijan does not resolve the issue of prisoners of war, no other issues should be discussed with Azerbaijan’: Davit Sanasaryan

April 05,2021 13:50

Politician and former director of the State Supervision Service, Davit Sanasaryan, assured that if his party receives the people’s vote and enters parliament during the upcoming elections, the first initiative will be to form an investigative commission on the 44-Day War to find out in detail what the reason was for Armenia’s defeat.

Davit Sanasaryan had announced that they presented an application for the Sovereign Armenia party to be registered. The first congress will take place on April 23rd.

When asked if the current authorities played a role in Armenia’s defeat during the 44-Day War, politician and former director of the SSS, Davit Sanasaryan, responded during Radar Armenia’s live broadcast, “Yes, they played a role. I do not think it will be objective if we were to say that the entire responsibility lies on the current government. For many years after 1994, you win the war and begin to negotiate what you will be returning those lands in exchange for. All of Armenia’s authorities have negotiated on this issue. For many years when state funds were squandered and state wealth was plundered for certain clans’ interests, the former government was to blame, of course, but the current government is to blame politically. The current authorities have weakened foreign policy.”

When asked if it was possible to take steps that would prevent war, Davit Sanasaryan said, “Yes, it was. We needed to try and have a more flexible diplomatic approach. It was also possible to start building relations with Turkey and to speak about that. We should have taken the chance, at the very least, and somewhat reduced Turkey’s role in this war.”

Regarding statements made by representatives of the current government that Armenia must have positive relations, etc., Davit Sanasaryan said, “I said that we must present ourselves without compromising our rights in our relations with Turkey instead of other states doing so on our behalf, whether they are strategic allies or other states. We must directly present our state interests during tête-à-tête meetings. We needed to have bought as much time as possible so we could equip our army with more technology.”

When asked if we should prepare for peace or war, Sanasaryan said, “We should prepare for peace, but not through pacifism. We must bring our security system up to speed and build foreign policy in our worldwide relations correctly, including raising our issues with Turkey, but that doesn’t mean we should give up on our rights. That doesn’t mean that Turkey shouldn’t come face-to-face with the dark pages of its history. Azerbaijan and Turkey need to come face-to-face with their problems. If Azerbaijan does not resolve the issue of prisoners of war, no other issues should be discussed with Azerbaijan. Agreements need to be fulfilled in full.”

When asked if Turkey is our enemy, the former SSS director said, “Turkey has implemented a policy of denial, and it supports warfare and other similar situations in the region. I believe that has hostile elements. But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t speak with Turkey.”
